Updated Resources from SAMHSA-HRSA

The Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Center for Integrated Health Solutions have announced new and revised webpages on trauma, suicide prevention, and intimate partner violence.

The updated content includes information on screening and assessment, as well as education and training tools, and many more useful resources.

Social Security Number Removal Initiative

Getting Ready for Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers…


As you may know, beginning in April 2018 CMS will start mailing Medicare cards with new Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs) to all people on Medicare. The 11 digit MBI will replace the Social Security Number (SSN)-based Health Insurance Claim Number for transactions like billing, eligibility status, and claim status after a transition period. According to CMS, here is what you can do to make sure your systems are ready:

Visit the Social Security Number Removal Initiative (SSNRI) Home and Provider web pages and subscribe to the weekly MLN Connects newsletter for updates and new information.

Verify your patients’ addresses. Your patients will not get a new card if their address is not correct. If the address you have on file is different than the Medicare address you get in electronic eligibility transaction responses, ask your patients to correct their address in Medicare’s records through Social Security.

Mental Health Statistics

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there are 43.8 million adults that experience mental illness in a given year and provide a breakdown of statistics by sex, age groups, and ethnicity.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness has compiled some interesting facts about the prevalence and impact of mental illness. They include statistics on children and adults, cultural groups and other populations, as well as access to services. You can find this information on their Infographics & Fact Sheets page. They also have clear, concise information sheets on a number of mental health topics that you can download.
