Security and Wi-Fi

Are your data files safe when you are connected to Wi-Fi? If your File and Printer Sharing is set to On, then you are at risk for a security breech.

Go to Control Panel and select Network and Internet, then select Network Sharing Center. From here select the option Change Advanced Sharing Settings. Under Public or All Networks, make sure to turn off File and Printer Sharing and turn off Public Folder Sharing.

The Importance of IT Support

Depending upon the size of your practice, you may have onsite computer and network support, or you may outsource the support to a local vendor. In any case, it is very important to have someone you can call upon to maintain your computer equipment and your computer network.

It is easy to view the maintenance of your computer systems as a burden, but in reality it is an essential part of business operations, and an essential part of protecting and maintaining your confidential information. We have recently been contacted by customers that have lost data for a variety of reasons. In some cases a computer system crashed or the data backup utilities failed to work properly. The result of such events can be disastrous, but can be avoided by properly maintaining your computing environment.

We recommend cultivating a relationship with your IT provider and recommend scheduling periodic visits to make sure everything is working properly. Some of our smaller customers schedule bi-weekly visits to check for viruses and spyware, as well as to perform a general status check of systems. The IT resource can also check your system backup and perform a test restoration of files to confirm the reliability of the backup utilities. Read more
