May is “Mental Health Awareness Month.” It was started by the support organization, Mental Health America in 1949. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental health concerns affect one in ten Americans, but fewer than twenty-five percent with a diagnosable mental disorder will seek treatment. Those of us that promote Mental Health Awareness Month hope to help increase the number of people who will talk to their doctor or a mental health professional about their concerns.
